The Marangu Route begins at Marangu Gate (1,870 meters) on the South-East side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Typically you will be driven to the gate from Moshi, which takes approximately an hour and passes through the village of Marangu. If approaching from Arusha it takes over two hours to reach Marangu gate. Marangu route is the only route in Kilimanjaro with the comforts of solar powered sleeping huts and comfortable beds at every camp.

What to Expect on 7 Days Climbing Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

Marangu is the easiest route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Its ascension profile is very gradual and steady, allowing for painless trekking for most of the way. However, due to its reputation as an easy route, Marangu is often selected by unprepared, inexperienced climbers. Correspondingly, only about 35% of the people actually make it to the top.

There are beds at both mandara and kibo huts and 120 beds at horombo hut. Bathrooms and running water are available at the two lower huts. This route is usually done in 6 days, but you can do it in 7 days for better acclimatization. You can spend your extra day resting at horombo or climbing to a base camp below kilo’s sub peak mawenzi.

Day 1of the 7 Days Climbing Kilimanjaro Marangu Route: Nairobi - Arusha

Pick up from the Airport or from your hotel after the breakfast, the departure is normally 0800am, then proceed to Kenya and Tanzania border by the name Namanga, the drive from Nairobi to the border normally takes about 2-3 hrs, on arrival visit the migration department, those who do not have the visa obtain one and this process normally takes about 30min depending with the people applying. The visa cost 50usd for Non Americans and 100usd for American citizens, after the migration proceed to Arusha and this will take you about 1.5-2hrs.

Day 2of the 7 Days Climbing Kilimanjaro Marangu Route: Arusha - Mandara Hut

After breakfast, drive 45kms to Marangu Gate (1860m). Walk 9 kms through dense semi-tropical Rain Forest to Mandara Hut (2744m). Dinner and overnight.

Day 3of the 7 Days Climbing Kilimanjaro Marangu Route: Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut

Depart early morning for a 10hr walk up to Horombo Hut (3761m). The landscape becomes more rigged and rocky but superb, with mawenzi and Kibo peaks in view. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4of the 7 Days Climbing Kilimanjaro Marangu Route: Horombo Hut - Kibo Hut

After breakfast, proceed on a 6hr walk through spectacular mountain vegetation to Kibo Hut (4732m). Dinner and overnight at Kibo Hut

Day 5of the 7 Days Climbing Kilimanjaro Marangu Route: Kibo Hut Uhuru Peak - Horombo

The final attempt to the summit is made in the early hours of the morning at 2:00 am. It takes about 5 hrs to the most difficult steep part of the route to Gil man Point(5681m). From Gil mans, it takes one hour thirty minutes to Uhuru Peak (5895m.) Descend to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 6of the 7 Days Climbing Kilimanjaro Marangu Route: Horombo - Moshi - Arusha

Descent is rapid. After breakfast, walk down to Marangu Gate for transfer to Moshi. Dinner and overnight in Moshi or Arusha

Day 7of the 7 Days Climbing Kilimanjaro Marangu Route: Arusha - Nairobi

Depart for the airport or other destinations in Tanzania or Kenya. A trip to the beaches at Mombasa, Malindi, Lamu and Zanzibar is a good way to recuperate. We can arrange many reasonably priced trips and safaris around Moshi and the Kilimanjaro region.
