Golf at Great Rift valley. The 18-hole championship course at 7,000 feet on the Eburru Range is both challenging and exciting. Sitting on the Mau Escarpment in the Great Rift Valley, the course commands stunning vistas of Lake Naivasha, Mount Longonot, the Kinangop Range and Aberdare Mountains. The golf resort is famous for one the longest holes in Kenya – the par 5 – 17th ‘signature’ at 598 meters (654 yards)! The well-watered golf course has contoured greens built to USGA specs with “tiffgreen” grass. The three teeing positions and the fairways are planted to the indigenous Kikuyu grass which remain green and lush throughout the year.

All golf holes are well bunkered, and there are five water features on the course. The air is fresh, temperatures range between 16º – 34º c. Rains are generally at night and golf is played the year round 12 hours a day. Golfers give right of way to the wild animals who have taken residence on the lush fairways and tiny islets in the ponds. Flocks of Black-headed Oriole, Fischer’s Lovebirds and Egyptian geese sun themselves on the greens without batting an eyelid at the golfers.

After a leisure breakfast at the Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort, you’ll depart overland to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, jewel of Kenya’s game park. Centuries of close association with the wildlife has resulted in an almost symbiotic relationship where wildlife and Maasai people live in peace with one another.

A highlight of the Mara is no doubt the annual wildebeest migration, when literally millions of these beasts stray north from the Serengeti in search of grass for food, before turning south again. On this day you will have a pre breakfast game drive which gives you an opportunity to spot predators as they do their morning killings afterwards back to the lodge for full breakfast after which you leave for a mid-morning game drive.

Option activities visit to the Elephant orphanage

After breakfast, we may visit the Elephant orphanage and enjoy being with little elephants. Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is located near Nairobi National Park. This orphanage, for elephant calves and rhinos from all over Kenya was founded and still managed by Daphne Sheldrick, the widow of one of Kenya’s best known Game Wardens David Sheldrick, who was at the center of the 1970’s ivory poaching wars in Tsavo National Park.

Today, the Sheldrick orphanage is best known for its elephant rescue project. Elephant calves, orphaned by poaching are brought here from all over the country. The baby elephants are specially nursed by dedicated staff, as they are highly dependent on milk. Elephant calves are a challenge to raise, as they are dependent on their mother’s milk for the first two years. The baby elephants at the Sheldrick nursery are bottle fed with a special milk formula. They are also necessarily covered in blankets to protect them from the morning cold. When the elephants are stable enough to survive on their own in the wild, they are then moved to Tsavo National Park, where they are carefully reintroduced into wild herds. Enjoy a heartwarming sight of the calves being bottle fed on their milk formula, and after, a happy, playful and splashy mud bath like toddlers, to keep cool under the harsh sun.

Day 12: Karen – Golf at Muthaiga

After breakfast, we will drive to the Muthaiga Golf Club. Muthaiga Golf Club, proudly called the Home of Golf by its elite membership, is in many ways the ultimate embodiment of Kenya’s unique marriage of ancient golf tradition and a modern 18-Hole Championship Golf Course. Muthaiga Golf Club has been reborn as one of the most prestigious and challenging courses in the region. The force behind this renaissance is an extensive course reconstruction by the celebrated South African course designer Peter Matkovich, which in 2004 returned Muthaiga to its prominence as the finest course with the fastest greens in East Africa. Winding through the lush woodlands of Karura Forest, Muthaiga Golf Club offers a great ambiance with numerous lakes and ponds. Lunch will be served at the club.
